It's a book by Will Self in which he tries to convey that there is a limited amount of sanity in the world, and that the reason people go insane is because other people take your sanity to keep them selves from going insane. Surely, the thinking behind this is to break some of the small market teams, and thus contract the league. It was a treat to find Dr Zak Busner making a return after Will Self's "Quantity Theory of Insanity", dominated as ever by his unconscious urge to power. It's there in the title story of his first collection of short stories “The Quantity Theory of Insanity”, which recounts the results of an experiment at a mental hospital in London. Will Self uses them in The Quantity Theory of Insanity with brilliant elan. It's a situation outside of your control, probably on the way to a location you don't want to be. In the 4th tale we finally get to meet the narrator, as he explains the story of "The Quantity Theory of Insanity", as well as explaining the theory, he goes on to expound on what happened after he went public with this theory. His short fiction collection The Quantity Theory of Insanity and twin novellas Cock and Bull, published in the preceding years, were visceral statements, bricks through the window of the literary establishment. Self's short stories “The Quantity Theory of Insanity,” “Ward 9,” “Grey Area” and “Dr Mukti,” as well as the novels Great Apes (1997) and Book of Dave (2006). The Quantity Theory of Insanity is Will Self's first book, and although I had previously read Cock and Bull before I picked up this text, I felt as though I was starting over with his oeuvre. An ashtray that makes my sheltered life spent reading books seem worthwhile. As a novel it's perhaps too long and disjointed, but as a set of linked stories (much like Self's debut The Quantity Theory of Insanity) it stands up, and the final section flies. This fits in nicely with Will Self's "Quantity Theory of Insanity," which posits that there is a constant amount of insanity in the world at any given time, which just moves from population to population.
